Chasing Avocet – Final Chapter

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

After birding on Wednesday, I spent an hour at the beach with my sister. I had just settled in and logged on to work when I got the message.

The Avocet has been spotted at Succotash Marsh, a local hot spot about 10 minute drive past Quonnie. He was “being cooperative”. Translation – they were getting great pictures. I had meeting for about two hours.

I said my prayer to the birding gods that he would still be there 2.5 hours later. He was.

Surprised there was no one there when I arrived and this beautiful, amazing bird was about 40 feet from me, posing in the salt pond. I started snapping photos and didn’t stop for about 10 minutes. That is when another birder arrived, then another etc.

At this point he had moved further away and wasn’t so obvious. It felt good to be able to point him out to a birder who had helped me find a Wilson’s Phalarope and a Caspian Tern in May. More birders arrived and the circus started, but it wasn’t too bad.

I needed to get back to work, but it was satisfying to finally find the bird. He is beautiful.
