Becoming Wild at Night

For my birding and reading friends -- I recently finished "Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace" by Carl Safina -- highly recommend it.

For those who like murder mystery novels and birds I have started series written by Steve Burrows. Unfortunately I read a mid-series book first -- my mistake. But I'm now almost done with the first one -- A Siege of Bitterns (which is BTW what a flock of Bitterns is called) Burrows seamlessly weaves knowledge of birds into the story through an accomplished detective who is also an excellent birder. I find them well written, interesting and I'm learning stuff. If you like that genre -- you will like the books.

So I went night birding this evening and shortly after I started off I heard two very clear Whip-poor-will calls. Very recognizable. I started thinking about it and realized it is unlikely there would be one around this time of year. But It was very clear and I just downloaded a new ringtone for my phone - a Whip-poor-will. I have no idea why it played, I wasn’t getting a call nor was I anywhere near the app that would play it. Weird. What was my old ringtone? A duck!
