Bon Voyage

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

A Mass of birders queuing up to board the ship. Haven’t found my compatriots yet, last I heard they were having breakfast a few towns over. It isn’t Vince’s first rodeo, so he’s probably got a system.

I do not have a system, my car was @15 minutes late at the hotel pick-up. Same driver as from the airport, but I still don’t have a phone #. I got a marriage proposal when I got in the car - if I was Myra (IFYKYK) I would have accepted. I am not Myra. I do however miss Myra, I might have to just dance a little Salsa before the week is out…

Waiting to Board - it was HOT!

The ship from the dock

It’s a biiiiig ship. My balcony is nice - I even have a little place out of the sun. Saw a Cory’s Shearwater while unpacking and an Albatross but not close enough to ID what kind.

We're asea...

On the pool deck with Andrew & Vince…

So good to see them again...

The pool before the ship departed

So even though the ship is huge, there is definitely motion. The swimming pool was sloshing all over the place. Glad I brought my walking stick for stability - not seasick, although some others are. Thank God for the patch. I hope to get my sea legs soon.!

My temporary tattoos are not holding up well – the penguin is already gone but the Albatross is holding up well.  The ship is underway and tippier than I imagined – lots of people are queasy, but I’m fine (thank you patch!).

Had a lovely dinner with just Andrew, we caught up and he learned some of my history, which I rarely disclose. Andrew is going a Big Year in South Africa – shooting for 750 birds – WOW – I’m convinced it is going to be a great year for him, full of adventure and happiness!

Here is some context on where we are headed.

Marion Island is the blue dot at the bottom -- it is @a third of the way to Antarctica.

This was the route...

Off we go...
