It’s May and May is migration month. It is always the month of many birding festivals. Because of COVID most of them are either fully virtual or hybrid. This is great for me. I want to stay in Rhode Island right now because its migration month and I wasn’t really prepared for May last year. I still might not be really prepared – so the virtual coaching is extremely helpful.
On Friday night I had another birding epiphany, although it seems to me I have had this same epiphany before. Our speaker is a retired “lister” – one who keeps list of birds he sees and formally or informally competes with others. As a lister there is a tendency to just check the box and not spend time with the birds.
I have publicly stated several times, I want to spend time with the birds. I love the birds. I fully admit to having dragged myself back into the listing mode. I am hoping since I was relegated to #6 in Rhode Island e-bird last week, that I will finally give it up for good.
Honestly I got so few warblers (and other migrants) last year, I can’t help but do better. I think I may have already and it is just the first week. I continue to be hampered by less than 100% fitness to be walking distances on trails. I have to go slow – in birding that is a good thing. In listing it is not.
I’ve done well in the last few days, not chasing, but just birding. I find the birds come to me – either that or I’m manifesting them. Either way it is a joy. Here are a few of my treasures.
