A few days ago a very experienced birder called me and asked me what was my secret for finding Chats. Unfortunately when I say they find me it is true. Not once was I looking for one, they just show up.
There is nothing I find more rewarding in the birding process than helping other people find a rare bird. I think it falls in the category of collective effervescence- joy multiplied by sharing it. She was understandably frustrated and told me I would hear her scream for joy all the way in Westerly when (not if) she finds the bird. Someone else found it yesterday, certainly increasing her consternation.
Today I was on Jamestown and happen to be driving by the spot where I had seen the Chat when my phone dinged with a text from her. “Did you hear me scream?” I knew she had finally found the Chat, so I turned the car around, told her I was pretty close and had heard her exclamation of joy. We talked while she recounted the find with elation. It made me joyful to see her so happy!
This is a person has been so generous with her time and advice that comes with many years of birding and she still finds such joy when the bird actually shows up. I love that and look forward to many years ahead of joy for me & other birders. I will say again I have found birders to be smart, funny and extremely generous sharing their knowledge and love of these beautiful creatures. The best pastime ever!
