Larkspur

Writer's picture: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

Yesterday I went to Misquamicut State Beach to continue my futile search for the Black-Headed Gull (every day for a week at 3:30ish) and got a notice that there was a Lapland Longspur there. So I went to the other side of the parking lot and scanned the Horned Larks -- There were @70 of them. I already have both birds for the year, but I need to work on my "live" ID skills -- I still rely too much on reviewing photos post-bird. Since I had just seen this bird, I thought it was a good place to start. I looked didn't see it. They flushed and landed a ways away. Bill Thompson was also there and was kind enough to point from his car at the bird -- still didn't see it. But he gave me some good advice.

When I went down today, I got another notice that someone had just seen them. There was a car from CT on the side of parking lot where they have been hanging. It was too close to the birds and it kept flushing them. I was just about to go over and talk to him about keeping his distance but finally I was able to get eyes on one -- and starting taking photos. Then I was treated to a two-fer when another one showed up close enough to get a decent shot! I'm just very happy I found the bird with my eyes. My bird moment for the day!
