6:35 am eBird & Map my walk both recording the track I set off to walk the Red Swamp Trail at Trustom Pond Federal Wildlife Refuge. Some one set off just before me and I was greeted with signs imploring hikers to keep their social distance and not have groups with more than 5 people. No worries at this hour. It was just me and the birds.

The trail winds through a field and I was cursing my sunglasses that remained in the car as I swung past the Farm Pond I saw someone else coming my way.

We both froze.

Like Deer in the headlights.

I was not expecting anyone come back in at the hour.

She put her turtleneck over her mouth.

I stopped and looked away from the trail feeling embarrassed that I did not have a mask.

Until then I was having a lovely morning. It is sad to be reminded of the “real” world in the middle of the wood.
