Most mornings I start my birding with about 15 minutes at the Watch Hill Lighthouse. For most of the winter I was alone. In February other people started showing up.
There is a fisherman who spends about 15 minutes suiting up to go over the wall. I have never seen him catch anything. There is a guy & his dog that show up in a white Lexus that cavort on the grounds for a few minutes. Some random kids and photographers occasionally show up to watch the sunrise.
One morning I was watching the ducks cavort among the waves, when I spotted another duck flying their way. He looked like he was landing, but after hovering close, he swooped up toward my car – as he approached, I realized it wasn’t a he, it was a it.
This wasn’t the first drone I’d seen, but it was the first one I had mistaken for a duck. Drones look a lot like an awkward duck landing, particularly when they are piloted by an inexperienced pilot, who clearly doesn’t mind losing it in the ocean.
