Swallowed Again

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

In the spring I wrote about being swarmed by tree swallows at Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Yesterday I learned about swallow staging – they gather in increasing numbers until they decide to depart their trip south.

Today at Quonnie we saw the beginnings of that staging. There were probably about 100 swallows swooping and then landing on the fences briefly before flying again. It is just a harbinger of the swarm to come.

This evening they started gathering in the field my porch overlooks. I’m so excited! But I’ve learned to be patient, so I’ll just wait until they come to me.
