Avondale Farm is on my regular morning route. It has also been one of my most productive birding territories. This morning I absent-mindedly drove past the entrance I normally take. I considered just driving on but my birding Spidey sense was tingling and I took a detour back to the normal entrance. I drove in, heard nothing, saw nothing and then turned around to leave. I stopped and lowered my window.
Then I saw it.
A bird with another bird in its talons.
I grabbed the camera and started shooting. A Peregrine Falcon swooped down about 5 feet from the ground and 10 feet in front of my car. Of course, that was the shot I missed, but I got about 7 others. At some point it must have released the prey because it doesn’t have it in the later photos.
My bird moment for the day, one I almost missed.
All the best days have bird moments.
