A Bird a Day in May

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

I ran a contest in my community during the COVID 19 outbreak to find a bird a day (or rather 31 birds in May). It was a nice way to introduce folks to birding, which clearly I find endlessly fascinating.

It is a way to safely get people out of their houses and into fresh air, or at least their cars.

We had 12 teams (one in Connecticut and two in Florida) and they had varying degrees of commitment and experience. Everyone enjoyed it and the birds.

I hosted & judged so I did not compete for prizes, but I found more new birds for My Big Year in May than I did the month I started. That was part Spring Migration and part competition.

It made me look at birds I haven’t really “seen” in months. Always good to revisit old friends and smile that smile or recognition that only and old friend can illicit.

Hello old friends!
