Honestly, since I got back from Canada, I've had a little trouble getting motivated to go out birding. Although every time I return from a trip, I find Rhode Island birding a little pedestrian, until I don't...
One day this week I found the love again. I was driving to Newport before dawn -- that is my favorite time of day. It is such a beautiful unveiling of the day -- different each day, but nearly always stunningly beautiful. As I went through an intersection on Route 1 -- I passed a car that was covered in small Christmas lights -- all lit up. I wouldn't even notice that in the light of day.
It got me wondering why I did find this joy and solace in nature earlier in my life. I guess I was busy. I guess I was making a living, working in a city and just not paying attention. I was saving for a good life in retirement.
I've always like nature. Enjoyed hiking, camping and beautiful landscapes. Admittedly I was a beach girl. I still love the ocean, but I've come to appreciate other habitats -- OMG I've started calling them habitats.
I found it exactly when I was supposed to - five years ago. Although I no longer have that beginner's fascination all the time, it still shows up every once in a while and it is still wonderful and wonder-filled!
