A week of surprises

Writer's picture: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

Monday I decided to finally go see the Grasshopper Sparrow at Francis Carter Preserve -- there was a bonus as a Vesper Sparrow remained for a third day.

Tuesday started my "residency" at Quonnie. In previous years I have started earlier, but cold temps (which continue) and high water have been a deterrent. I decided this was the week I needed to start up again -- there were rewards. But to catch a better tide situation I started my birding day in Westerly.

Semipalmated Sandpiper

Ruddy Turnstone

Flora

Sunday brought an early morning at Quonnie -- disrupted by two unleashed Dogs and two entitled owners. Reminding me of the "joys" of summer here. I will avoid the weekends there as much as possible from now until Labor Day.

Bank Swallow

Ruddy Turnstone

Bonaparte's Gull (on the Sandbar)

Red Knots

This is the 7th Red Knot -- six of them have been around for almost a week, but this one only came in a few days ago. It often stays put when the other 6 flush, weird.

Herring Gulls Kerfuffle about a Crab breakfast

Northern Mockingbird

Black-bellied Plover

Great Blue Heron on Atlantic Avenue

Snowy Egret on Atlantic Avenue

Great & Snow Egrets, Atlantic Avenue

Next week will include some time in Maine & a Pelagic.
