Alligators & Birds & Bernie

Just before I left RI I finally connected with a photographer friend of mine who has spent a lot of time and gotten some amazing photos in Florida. She highly recommended that I got the the St. Augustine Alligator Zoological Park. It is a fairy short walk (my main requirement) so off we went (I'm birding the last few days with my friend and host Joyce). Joyce had been there over 10 years ago and wasn't expecting much -- but it was a lot bigger than she remembered. They have Alligators, Tortoises, Crocodiles and some exotic birds in enclosures, but the main feature I wanted was the Rookery where birds can come and go as they please.

And they pleased. I got my first Roseate Spoonbills almost 20 of them and SOOOOO close. They really don't care about the people on the boardwalk, in fact on always got me (with poop). Lots of Egrets and White Ibis, plus a single Tricolored Heron. But for today's photos just my Life Bird --Roseate Spoonbills...

In the small world category I ran into Bernie (who's last name I don't know) who I know from sitting on the point at Quonnie -- I don't think I've even ever run into him somewhere else in RI. He approached me from behind -- and said HI! So funny -- it was the first time either of us had been there -- we had a nice chat about birding in Florida (he was displaced from Sanibel this year).

We were tired from all the walking yesterday and did the rest of the day basically from the car save a short stop at a Nature Center. We stopped by a place named Bird Island Park but it just had the usual suspects -- surprising nice for a public park. It has a walking maze shaped like a Sea Turtle. Fun!

I'm back at Joyce's preparing for the next leg of the trip -- Laundry, Organizing, Blogging etc. and we're off to an early dinner. If the weather cooperates I'll be on a couple of Wildlife drives tomorrow. We'll see.
