An Injured Friend

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

This morning this little Seagull was standing in the middle of the road when I arrived at the beach, and I almost hit her. (I don’t know why I decided it was a she. I just did.) I stopped just in time, and when the gull didn’t flinch, I realized she had a bum right leg. Looked like it might have been crushed in yesterday’s storm; the gull seemed to be trying to figure it out, too, or maybe the puzzlement I saw on her face was simply pain. When I parked, to my surprise, the injured gull took flight and landed on the hood of my car, as if to give me a closer look; as though maybe I could help. As I watched her through the windshield, I wished I could help. But I didn’t have a clue as to how. A minute later, she took flight again, and flew out of sight. I hope she’s okay.
