I spent the morning catching up on my "admin" stuff and relaxing. I picked Maria up at the Jacksonville Airport and we headed for Jekyll Island in South Georgia. We found out at the Welcome Center that it was high tide. Another birder told me that was why the marsh was quiet, dead quiet. After a quick bird (the best thing we saw was a little racoon) we headed on to Amphitheatre Pond.
Maria had tried to bird their once before but couldn't figure out how to get into the pond. We headed in under an arch and up a hill. A hiker told us how to get to the Amphitheatre -- but that provided only a partial view of the pond -- Maria figure out how to get down there and it paid dividends -- a bunch of Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned Night Herons, an immature White Ibis and lots of Egrets.
We had a lovely lunch at The Wharf which would have been a productive birding view if it had been low tide although we did see an immature Bald Eagle when leaving. We ended our visit to Jekyll Island on the ocean side and headed back along the causeway to Saint Simons Island where we are staying. We stopped to take some photos of smallish shore birds.
Tomorrow we bird Saint Simons Island - although we may go back to Jekyll. We'll see where the birds take us.
