Chasing Avocet – Chapter 1

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

At @8pm on Tuesday I got a message that an American Avocet had been spotted earlier in the evening at Quonnie. 8pm is only about 30 minutes from darkness. I was only 10 minutes from away. I stopped thinking, grabbed my keys and left.

I was the first birder to arrive and scanned the area where it likely was, but did not spot him. The light was fading fast. Two other birders showed up with only one pair of bins and no scope (which lets you see MUCH further). Birders kept arriving, still no scope and light was really fleeting.

We kept searching, but it was for naught. I left vowing to return at first light. Others stayed, thought they might have seen something that could have been the bird.

Everyone was unsatisfied, so no photo.
