Costume Change

I vividly remember the first time I saw a female Red-Winged Blackbird. I thought it was a Whip-poor-will or something new. It was not.

It was my biggest lesson yet that a bird that looks different isn’t always new. Sometimes it’s just a familiar bird in a new costume.

It happened in May when the birds lit up with their breeding plumage. It will happen again soon when they don the dull duds of winter. Just when I think I know the birds, cue the costume change – more to learn.

I love every minute!

Note -- Not a Female Red-Winged Blackbird because I haven't saved any of those photos -- this is a juvenile European Starling -- the latest bird to fool me.
