Yup that is how I feel. Waiting in the cold dawn for better than first light, some kind of precipitation is falling. Is it my luck or just feeling completely out of my element?
Probably a bit of both.
There is one car from Ohio that has been here overnight. Another car pulled in 10 minutes after me. And we wait.
Part of me really wants to see this bird.
Part of me wants to save this bird.
Why?
It is not an endangered species.
It is a living creature.
It is a Common Cuckoo – this is only the third report of it in the Continental US.
A beautiful living creature.
It is way off course. It is eating monarch caterpillars. They are poisonous to most birds. The usuals know that and either puke them up or avoid them
This touristy bird does not know that.
It is a stranger in a strange land.
I want it to survive.
I fear my hope is in vain.
Still I would like to put eyes (if not lens) on him. It almost feels like going to the zoo. If it wasn’t for the MOB (Multiple Other Birders) circus I would have seen it days ago.
I could have had a moment with it.
The snow is picking up,
I don’t get eyes on it.
It flew in 15 minutes after I left.
Zen birding lesson of the day: sometimes you see the bird, sometimes the weather wins.
