I departed Westerly at 3;17am and arrived in Fayetteville, NC at 2:24pm -- @700 miles covered. When I filled by gas tank in Westerly my estimated range was 400 miles. When I filled by tank in Maryland and again in North Carolina my estimated (and in the case of Maryland actual) range was 560 miles. I think something is added to the Northeast's gasoline that degrades the gas mileage, but is good for the environment -- but that is @10mpg -- that's a lot.
So what do you think I did when I got here. I went birding. Took a ride around a local neighborhood -- saw a Merlin perched on a tree (unreported here according to eBird) and saw a Carolina Chickadee - a new life bird for me. Did not get a photo, but this will not be the last time I see one on this trip. Also went to 95 rest area just south of my hotel's exit because they were the closes eBird hotspot - all new North Carolina birds because I had none as of yesterday.
I didn't get birds in Connecticut or New York on the way down -- it was dark. I got birds in New Jersey, Delaware (I was concerned about the fact I was only in the state for @15 minutes), Maryland, Virginia too. It was a good day. The photos below are NOT from the highway!
