eBird Withdrawl

Writer's picture: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

I was at a trail head in northern Rhode Island, about to chase the Red Crossbill that have been sighted there for the last few weeks. I decided it would be good to know what they sound like. I pull up eBird on my iPhone and it is behaving oddly. I fussed with it for a few minutes and finally realize it is down for 2 DAYS?

I used eBird more than my e-mail. How is it possible that I did not know about this outage. Apparently it was planning. Perhaps I need to less attention to eBird and more attention to e-mail.

So why, you might ask, do I care so much.

I do care.

A lot.

eBird is my 411 for local birding. I spend at least an hour every night reviewing and digesting what birds have been see in Rhode Island. It helps me plan my birding for the next morning.

Frankly at the moment, I’m not sure how I will decide what to do the next two days. It is a little unsettling – sort of like a news blackout.

Who knows, this might be good for me.

Right now it doesn’t feel that way.

This weekend I listened to a lecture about how eBird has changed Birding. How people often only report the unusual and forget or don’t bother to report the usuals. I am guilty of that at times.

Maybe these two days will teach me to do without.

I don’t think so, but you never know.
