Ah birding in Rhode Island in winter. A Green-tailed Towhee was reporting last night at Sachuest NWR -- it's a pretty rare bird and since I had to be in Middletown for an appointment at 10:30 anyway, I headed out. There were three birders there before me, so I decided to go the other way.
I had never been down that trail before and took the road less travelled. The directions were conflicting to say the least, but it mentioned a path not on the map. Although it is not something I usually do, I took a deer trail that looked like it might be what was described -- so I spent 45 minutes fruitlessly fiddling around there but I found a good candidate for habitat.
When I joined the horde it had grown quite a bit and they had been in the one place for awhile. I suggested they might want to try the other trail I had found. Tim & Louise remained with me when the woman who found the bird yesterday came walking up -- I called the other folks back and she gave us a general idea where she actually saw it. I had to leave and about 2 hours later one birder saw the bird for a few seconds. I'm sure all who stayed and searched were cold and wet -- not a nice day.
I came back to Westerly and right after I decided not to go back and look -- I was treated to a sight I haven't seen before -- an immature Bald Eagle perched on our local Osprey nest. A nice way to end the day.
