Longing for The Chase

Writer's picture: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

I’ve been sick for almost two weeks now. Normally I would have gone out anyway, but in this time of Self-quarantine, it didn’t seem appropriate. It is just a cold (I’ve been tested), but it was just not worth the risk to others.

I have food and the other stuff I need. I have been out birding every day, but I stick to my car and my usual spots.

Last week a Wilson’s Plover – a rare gem from the south – was spotted on a beach a few towns away. Birders were literally flocking there for the next few days. I so wanted to go, but it wasn’t in the cards. I’m told usually when there is a rarity in town, it is there for a few days. Then it flies the proverbial coop.

That hasn’t been the case this summer. Three fairly rare birds hung out at the state beach for months. A King Eider floated in the local Breachway for a few months and this Wilson’s Plover was still reported there yesterday. I can’t get there until Saturday and I will probably go.

I miss finding new birds – it’s been a few weeks and I’m hungry.
