Mudflats

A great walk this morning out to the Ninigret Mudflats - east of the breachway with Maria & Laura Carberry from Audubon. Lots of Seaside & Salt Marsh Sparrows -- singing and flitting around - Lifers for Maria. The usual suspects and lots of Short-billed Dowitchers & peeps. A First of Year Stilt Sandpiper for me and a lifer for Maria and a new 2022 bird for me. Plus a Spotted Turtle (Laura was surprised it was in salt water)

Because we had to cross a channel and I need a bigger dry bag for my good camera. I just had my old camera body & a 300mm lens (vs my 600mm). If it wasn't cloudy/foggy my photos would have been better -- there are serviceable for an ID, but not great. I will remedy that soon.

As we were leaving there was a Great Shearwater sitting on the side of the road (surrounded by the beach managers). Laura has passed by shortly before us, so I called and asked her to come back. The bird was occasionally walking a few steps further into the road (meanwhile some of the RVs were trying to leave for the weekend). I've never seen a Shearwater walk, but it was very awkward. Laura called a few folks at DEM & Audubon and finally got the bird in a box and found a rehab that would accept it. That is no mean feat with Avian Flu fears. I donated a beach towel to the cause and really hope the bird recovers.
