One of my favorite bird moments was in late January. As I was out birding, a work truck was tailing me, the driver not caring in the least that I brake for birds. He had a job to do and he wanted to get it done. I was passing The Ocean House hotel, so I pulled into the employee entrance to let the truck driver go by, and as I did so, to my amazement, I thought I spied a Junko in a tree across the way. A Junko is a fairly common bird, but the morning light was really beautiful and I didn’t yet have a great Junko photo. The truck passed and my eyes went back to the bird in the tree.
OMG. The Junko was gone. I couldn’t believe my eyes: It was an OWL. An Owl! My first Owl! Frankly, I'm shocked that I had the presence of mind to try to photograph this magnificent bird. I just kept thinking Oh my God, Oh My God, OH MY GOD! It was so well camouflaged I couldn’t believe I’d even seen him. Just then another truck passed by in the opposite direction, and when I looked back across the street my Owl was gone. I didn’t get the shot, but it remains in my mind’s eye.
