I count myself very lucky whenever I have a lot of birds hang out with me. Today at Quonnie my luck was spectacular. I walk out to greet about 40 Laughing Gulls, who flew off as I approached. But per usual, they returned as I sat quietly sipping my iced coffee.
Shortly there was a major Tern landing – not just the usual suspects, but 4 juvenile Forster Terns, that I’ve never seen in multiples, a juvenile Roseate Tern and a juvenile Black Tern. The washed, squawked and preened for about an hour. Allowing me to snap quite a large number of photos.
I suspect the juveniles are a harbinger of the fall migration. I will miss these guys. I should mention is was cold this morning – I need to start wearing long pants and watching the weather – I was not expecting the rain either.
Zen birding lesson of the day: Check the weather report before getting dressed (or making coffee)
