Gray Catbirds have become an anathema to me. They are subtly pretty birds and they sing a lovely song, but they are e-ver-y-where! Yesterday I gave someone very precise directions to see a Green Heron. He got some great photos and told folks I put him in the “Catbird’s seat”. That stopped me in my tracks. Before about 3 months ago I did not know what a Catbird was. That didn’t stop me from using the idiom.
There are a lot of idioms that have their origins in birds.
Like a Duck to water
An Albatross around the neck
As the Crow flies
Night Owl
Need I go on?
I think not, I’d be going on for quite some time. The next time you hear an expression like this, that you take some time to learn the bird it refers to.
