It was a flash of white as I was driving by. A gloomy, rainy morning, I almost didn’t go out birding. I braked for the potential bird. There it was, the first Great Egret since January. It’s on the small side, very slim and elegant, moving slowly so as not at attract my attention. Still I think sitting across with road with my window rolled down, getting sprinkled with a London-esque rain, I talked to it. For some reason I think it understood me.
It paused mid-step and almost seemed to smile as I told it how much I’d missed the egrets over the last few months. Maybe that was just transference. I was smiling and thinking how lovely it was to see it’s graceful walk in the marsh again.
