Through Rain & Sleet & Dark of Night

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

Today was not a great day for birding. This from a nascent birder. For my intrepid birder friends who were just a hare’s breath from 300 birds for the year, it was a lovely day for birding.

It was raining on and off, but that didn’t stop them. One was looking for the Red Crossbill, another the American Avocet (although she already had it this year) and a third just looking for a new bird.

She found one – a Pacific Loon amidst the raindrops and the gloom. A beautiful uncommon Loon swam off of the Watch Hill Lighthouse. I am grateful for my 205th bird of my Big Year.

I have watched these folks through ebird and some other means go out almost every day no matter the weather. Yes, Rain, Sleet and Dark of Night will not deter them from their mission. They are better than the post office. They don’t need sorting machines.

They are there.

I am in awe.

Zen birding lesson of the day: You won’t find anything if you don’t get out there a look.
