I took on a new hiking trail today. While Rhode Island isn’t new to me; I vacationed here for years before making the permanent move, hiking here is something I’ve only recently taken up. One of the benefits of birding is that it pushes one out the door, gets one moving, which opens up a whole new world. It has for me, anyway. The new hiking trail was a little confusing to me at first because there were a few offshoots, but I had my trusty trail app – today’s technological version of the trusty trail map – which I LOVE, because it lets me know how much farther I have to go, where the end is, it keeps me on the path, and when I’m done hiking I know how far I’ve gone.
On my way home, I spotted my first big year Bluebird(s) – a delightful discovery that just added to the enjoyment of my hike – and I found myself spontaneously bursting into song. Mr. Bluebird on my shoulder, it's the truth, it's actual, everything is satisfactual, Zip-a-dee doo dah! The selfie serenade continued for the duration of my hike; good thing I had the trail pretty much to myself.
Later that day, while driving on Watch Hill/Westerly Road, I spied two more Red-Tailed Hawks and another hawk whose species I could not decipher from my car. Back at my condo complex I discovered yet another large Red-Talked Hawk sitting in the tree across the street from The View. We sat looking at each other for a bit, but per usual, when I got out of the car to get a closer look, off he took. I need to figure out how to move in a stealthier manner; my car makes way too many warning noises that give me away and allow the birds I’m am chasing to make their swift getaway.
Still in all, it was a Zip-A-Dee Doo Dah kind of big year day.
