I spent about 5 minutes with a Gray Kingbird in Watch Hill today. Saw it perch, fly, catch an insect, get chased by Northern Mockingbirds (2), heard it vocalize while flying twice and got pretty close. Don't have fabulous photos, but had some great bird moments with a bird that hadn't been see in RI for @20 years and just one other person - before the circus kicked in.
Kudos to Noah Barreto for discovering it yesterday, Tom Seiter & Peter Capobianco for re-finding it today. I went back later and got some backlit shots from the road, but they aren't spectacular -- my memories of it are. I now owe Tom & Pete 2 life birds (this and the Brown Booby from last year) Life Bird: 316, Rhode Island Bird: 309, RI 2022 Bird: 287 - which is one more bird than had all of last year. That was my goal for the year, so I guess I can stop birding now --
It wasn't a perfect day, because I was with about 15 other people looking for the Kingbird when a Brown Pelican flew by -- they all saw it. I did not. Can't complain, it was a good day!
