The Bachelor of Avondale

Writer: Barbara SeithBarbara Seith

There is a Ring-necked Pheasant I’ve seen a number of times on Avondale Farm Road; it circles a Westerly Land Trust Property. He tends to hang out in and around a property whose owners have been putting out pheasant food. I’ve been told the owners are also thinking about bringing in some pheasant hens to keep this handsome bird from flying the coop, so to speak. This bird is a beauty, no doubt, and people who know a lot more about birds than me believe he may be an escapee from a nearby hunting release. I’ve had a couple of Moments with this pheasant, but until today, he has seemed a bit wary of me. This morning Mr. Ring-neck showed up on the Land Trust Property itself and we shared another few moments. The first occurred at my entrance to the property; he calmly checked me out and then walked on by. I continued on my morning route and when I entered the property again, there he was, just walking the loop. Perhaps this is his morning constitutional and I have just not witnessed it before. Perhaps the nearby property owners are overfeeding him and he needs the exercise. As I was leaving the park, he looked at me and started running, as though he had read my mind about the over indulgence of pheasant food and had decided a bit of a workout was in order, and I was his personal trainer.
